Behind COBIS

COBIS is a result of the political vision of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, and the Capital Region of Denmark to strengthen the biotechnological competences of the region. These two public institutions are supporting COBIS.

Behind COBIS are the two oldest and most experienced science parks in Denmark: Symbion Science Park and Scion DTU a/s. These science parks have many years of experience in operating high-tech facilities, commercializing research, venture financing new start-ups, and co-operating with universities, research institutions, trade, industry, and the entire palette of business advisers.

Symbion
Symbion Science Park has 22 years of experience in helping young, ambitious companies working with innovative, high technology and research-based ideas within IT, telecom, biotech, pharmacology, or medicine. Every year, Symbion helps approximately 220 young companies with facilities, advice, and/or financing.

Scion DTU
Scion DTU a/s, owned by Denmark’s Technical University, is Denmark’s largest science park and has 40 years experience in helping and servicing established research-based companies – including constructing and running advanced laboratory buildings for biotech companies. Today, Scion DTU houses Denmark’s largest biotech cluster measured by the number of employees – among these are recognised companies like ALK-Abelló, Santaris Pharma, 7TM Pharma, Symphogen, and Life Cycle Pharma.

In the heart of Medicon Valley
COBIS is located at the heart of one of the world’s strongest biotech regions, Medicon Valley.

Medicon Valley is one of Europe’s strongest life science clusters. The entire pharmaceutical value chain in Medicon Valley is flourishing – from target identification through preclinical and clinical development to manufacturing. The R&D process is mastered by companies within bio or medical technology and strongly supported by many specialised service providers, i.e. CROs, consultants and patent attorneys. More than 300 life science companies are currently located in Medicon Valley.

In Medicon Valley, there is a unique interplay between businesses, hospitals and universities, and public research institutions – the well-known triple helix model. Medicon Valley Alliance facilitates interaction and network activities in the cluster among the different public and private sector life science players. This interaction ensures a dynamic environment of innovation and knowledge-sharing – a prerequisite for new company formation and regional growth.

These unique conditions have led Medicon Valley companies to excel in research within many of the most commercially attractive therapeutic areas, such as diabetes, neuroscience, inflammation, and cancer research. Add to this an increasing amount of regional and foreign investments in Medicon Valley and the result is a prosperous cluster with many very successful biotech companies. There are many good reasons why the world is looking at Medicon Valley.
